Marine Environment
A healthy marine environment underpins all other activities that rely on the sea. The importance of ecosystems in their optimal states as an essential element for sustainable development is an idea that has grown steadily over the years. The Rio Summit in 1992 opened a new philosophy for conservation in that it promoted a 'whole ecosystem' approach to managing natural resources, rather than focusing on a single species. All activities that influence or compete for resources need to be taken in to consideration when managing ecosystems and this is the approach that is supported by the Devon Maritime Forum.
There are various bodies campaigning for marine nature conservation, and working tirelessly to raise the profile of marine issues. Follow the links on this page to find out more about these organisations and their work. Please view the Coastal Zone Management pages for more detail and information on coastal and marine conservation in Devon.
