Online Learning
There are many organisations that have produced online marine education and awareness resources. The links below and to the left are a selection of these. If you know of any others then please contact the Devon Maritime Forum Co-ordinator who will update this website accordingly.
Great British Marine Animals
The work of the marine biologists, Paul Naylor and Teresa Naylor, aim to contribute to promoting the protection, conservation and awareness of life in the beautiful but vulnerable seas around the British Isles. They offer presentations and educational work, raising awareness of British marine life and its conservation with school visits, as well as offering the use of resources such as an eye-catching display for use at events by conservation organisations and stunning underwater photographs of British marine species and habitats. Paul is also the author of Great British Marine Animals (2nd edition 2005), a fantastic learning aid for children and adults alike, available through their website.
MarLIN
MarLIN offer a variety of online learning resources. The Learning Zone offers resources for both teachers and young learners in the Activity Zone, including basic marine life information and a new interactive game Winners and Losers.
Living Coasts
Interactive online games can be found on Fun Zone, as well as education packages which can be found on their website.
The Shark Trust
The Shark Trust has a strong background in education and outreach; providing teachers and marine educators with accessible learning tools and resources. Their website gives access to an array of resources for use both inside and outside the classroom, as well as all sorts of exciting shark activities, games and downloads in their Activity Zone.
National Marine Aquarium
The Shark Trust has teamed up with the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth to create Sensational Sharks: Science Curriculum Coverage with bite! providing a programme of study for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The National Marine Aquarium also offers online information on education and marine science.
The Shore Thing
This unique project gives A Level/Higher students the opportunity to take part in 'REAL' science and voluntary groups to help monitor the impact of rising sea temperatures on our rocky shore species. Resources are available from this site, including The Shore Thing survey protocol, teacher's pack and training video.
The Wildlife Trusts
Wildlife Watch is the junior membership of the Devon Wildlife Trust, the fun club for all animal fans, nature sleuths and young environmentalists! The website offers games, activities and information on fun days out.
Operation Beach Clean
This animated virtual tour by Surfers Against Sewage features real life professional surfers who go down to the beach for a surf, only to find their beach and waves covered in pollution. Students can guide the characters to clean up their beaches, whilst introducing Key Stage 3 Science, English and Citizenship activities.
Dive Straight In!
A dip-in resource from CoastNet for engaging the public in marine issues.
FISHONLINE
A one-stop reference from the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) for people wanting to make the right choice when buying seafood. Identifies which fish come from well managed sources and/or are caught using methods that minimise harm to the sea's wildlife and habitats. MCS have also produced a Pocket Fish Guide that you can carry around with you when shopping, to help you choose sustainable seafood.
Fal River Educational Activities
Whether you're a parent or teacher, the activities on this website will give you some fun ideas to keep kids amused with a marine theme. Includes activities such as making animal puppets, sensory activities and identification games.
Marine Education Trust
An international programme which offers online education materials, providing a resource pack containing a series of practical activities to teach young people about marine life and environmental pressures.
The End of the Line - Educational Resources
Using the world's first major documentary about the devastating effect of overfishing, The End of the Line, this website offers resources for teachers to encourage students to look at the effects of over fishing on the world’s oceans. A range of activities including key scene analysis and explore issues such as the impact of technology on the ocean, the impact on human populations locally, nationally and globally, and possible solutions.

This site has been designed to provide teachers with a range of high quality, ready-made lesson plans that have a distinctly sea-related flavour and are fully referenced to the National Curriculum.
Jurassic Coast
The Jurassic Coast offers unparalled opportunities for cross curricular learning both inside and out of the classroom. Through their website you will find a range of resources to help you deliver exciting, thought-provoking lessons at a range of key stages and learning abilities. Their resources mainly focus on Geography, Citizenship and Science to encourage an appreciation of the values of the Jurassic Coast in the context of World Heritage.
Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society
This worldwide initiative aims to bring the world of whales and dolphins alive for people, through exhibitions, events and interpretation centres, highlighting the threats to whales and dolphins and the need to protect them now and for the future. As well as offering a UK Education Programme, their website includes information about how to take part in the Dolphin Diploma and offers a variety of free educational resources for children, teachers and schools.
RSPB
Offer online educational and teaching resouces linked to the national curricula, including activity packs, games and toys that will help bring the wonderful world of wildlife and the environment to life in your classroom.
